Partner Alert: Noise PSAs at Times Square

Posted: December 10, 2019

NCEH’s Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) Initiative has hit the big times! Times Square, that is, a major commercial intersection, tourist destination, and entertainment Mecca known as “The Crossroads of the World.” Times Square is located in the midtown Manhattan section of New York City at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue. It extends from West 42nd to West 47th Streets and is extravagantly and very brightly decorated with billboards and advertisements. A 15 second Public Service Announcement for Noise-Induced Hearing Loss will be advertised on two of the largest billboards: the NASDAQ unit with 10,080 square feet, and the Thomson Reuters unit with 7,691 square feet, during the week of New Year’s Eve (12/24/19-12/31/19).
An estimated one million people celebrate New Year's Eve at Times Square with over a billion watching throughout the world.
The public health messages are clear:
  • Protect Your Hearing!
  • Loud Noises Can Hurt Your Hearing … And They’re Everywhere!
  • When You Can’t Avoid The Noise … Pop In Some Earplugs Or Wear Noise-Blocking Earmuffs.
  • Your Ears Will Thank You!

Sounds For Jimmy

Posted: November 12, 2019

Recently Radiolab, media dedicated to making science accessible to broad audiences, received a heartbreaking letter from a listener whose 3 year old son, Jimmy, is slowly losing his hearing. His question to Radiolab: "If you had a limited time left with hearing, what would you want to make sure you heard? What should be on the mixtape?"

In response, Radiolab would like to make a “mixtape” for Jimmy and they want your help. What sounds should Jimmy experience?

Student Member Dues Increase to $25 to Support Increased Engagement and New Programs

Posted: November 12, 2019

After much consideration, including the involvement and recommendations of student membership and student board representatives, the NHCA Executive Council voted to implement $25 annual dues for 2020 student renewals and new memberships. There were many factors taken into account when making this decision, including our ability to provide excellent service and value to the more than 300 current student members. This past year we launched a new website for improved access to industry and association information for all members, including students. It’s now much easier to navigate to access member-only information such as conference presentation archives, online forums to ask questions and share ideas, and educational resources on hearing loss prevention. Student members also have a unique educational opportunity to attend the NHCA 2020 Annual Conference, February 20-22 in Destin, Florida (at 30% to 75% registration discounts) to meet practitioners, hear innovative ideas and listen to practical experience, all to promote the prevention of noise-induced hearing loss. Student scholarships are available to members to cover conference costs as well as to assist with special projects, theses or dissertations relating to hearing loss prevention/hearing conservation. We will soon be launching a learning management system that will provide for increased opportunities for online learning and continuing education credits. Stay tuned! We invite students to renew, join, engage and take advantage of the many benefits offered through NHCA.
