How did dinosaurs sound?

While lion, tiger, and bear recordings have been used to represent the vocalizations of movie dinosaurs for many years, Dr. Julia Clarke, UT Austin paleontologist, has found that adjusting the frequencies of crocodilian, closed-mouth sounds, using models of the syrinx (vocal organ) of an early bird fossil, to closely match the size of a T. rex, yields a more accurate approximation of the sound of this well-known carnivore. Using computerized tomography (CT) scans of Parasaurolophus tubicen’s head crest, New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science paleontologists recreated the almost ten-foot resonating chamber to hear how air moving through the chamber might sound, as this dinosaur lacks a voice box or larynx. Additionally, fossils reveal that dinosaurs lacked both a malleus and an incus, and some had very long cochlear ducts. Spoiler alert: the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods did not sound at all like they do in film.
