NHCA E-News - April 2025
March Webinar Round-up

On March 12, NHCA and CAOHC jointly hosted a webinar "Silent Solutions: Effective Strategies for Noise Abatement". This webinar reviewed the fundamentals of acoustics in buildings such as sound waves, human perception of sound, behavior of sound indoors, and acoustic properties of building materials. They then presented techniques for effective noise abatement, including design for sound isolation between different spaces, the difference between absorbing and blocking sound, and the basics of noise and vibration control for machinery. We thank Terence Tyson, P.E. INCE Bd. Cert. and David Jones, P.E. INCE Bd. Cert. for sharing their expertise with the hearing conservation community. The webinar was recorded and can be purchased for view at: NHCA/CAOHC Webinar Series.

Sound Postcard

Other species can respond to loud sound by evolving protective mechanisms of their own. Researchers have found evidence that a common North American spider species alters its webs to deal with urban noise pollution. This can, however, make it difficult for them to find prey and detect mates. To learn more, read the news article here.

If you are curious how spiders can hear without ears, read this article here, with a link to this super-cool original scientific article here, which even links to a podcast.
