Sound Postcard

Some scientists have suggested that we are living in a giant cosmic void, and a recent paper backed up that idea by analyzing distorted sounds from the early universe! It turns out that we can learn about the early universe through a form of electromagnetic radiation called the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Thermal fluctuations in the CMB, dubbed “baryon acoustic oscillations” (BAOs) can yield measurements that help astronomers and cosmologists learn about the universe’s expansion history.
